KEWEENAW MEMORIAL TO HOST AARP 10-WEEK WALKING PROGRAM (50+ encouraged to register for free fitness program)
AARP and Keweenaw Memorial Fitness Centers of Laurium and Houghton announced that they will host a 10 week walking program. This is part of a broader AARP goal to help prevent illness and keep people well through positive changes to personal behaviors, like exercise and diet.
Studies have shown that regular walking can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, and even some cancers. Walking programs can also reduce insurance costs, increase employee productivity, and promote mental well-being. AARP has found that 74 percent of its members who exercise prefer walking over any other type of physical activity.
AARP research from 2007 10 week walking programs found participants reported many benefits related to participation in the program including positive changes in energy and endurance. Additionally, 44% of participants reported walking more frequently after joining the program, while 83% of participants reported they were more likely or extremely likely to continue to walk after the program.
“Walking is one of the easiest ways to get in shape,” said Katie Curtis, Fitness Center Coordinator. “You just need a pair of comfortable shoes and a little motivation to get out there and start moving.”
The AARP-Keweenaw Memorial Fitness Center 10-week walking program will help participants find safe places to walk, and provide tools and support to help them take personal responsibility for their health and stick with their exercise plans. Each participant will receive a free step counter and guidebook, and be invited to sign-up for a walking group and weekly educational talks on fitness and nutrition.
